'The Phantom Huntsman' print collaboration with Antiquated Press

It's been a long time coming but a collaborative print with Antiquated Press aka Joe Carr is finally available to buy.  'The Phantom Huntsman' is based on an illustration I did for my new zine FOLKGORE which Joe has lovingly recreated as an etching.  It's beautiful.  We did a little Q+A too which was great fun; read it here.

Joe is an incredible illustrator and printmaker and I feel really honoured to have been asked to collaborate on a project with him.  Below are some pics of the print as well as some of his original artwork.  Go furnish him with all your cash.

'A Brief History of Scratching' illustration

Another editorial illustration for Fact this time for an article about an old love of mine; turntablism. We were keen to move away from the tired old hand hovering over a turntable aesthetic so I came up with a constellation map of various scratch techniques.

'The Boy That Can Fly' print

I was asked to illustrate the story of 'The Boy That Can Fly!' for 10 Stories a website that has paired children's short stories with a range of contemporary illustrators.  More info here.  I decided to try incorporate some watercolours into the piece as I've been using them a lot over the summer.  My initial concerns were the loose watercolours would look odd alongside my more rigid linework but I'm really happy with the final piece.

Fact Magazine Trip Hop illustration

Fact magazine have just published a list of the top fifty trip hop records and by way of my murky Ninjatune Forum past I was asked to illustrate it.  It's another dream brief given I own many of the records listed.  Here's a screenshot of the final piece and in addition the piece in full with Beth Orton and Tricky who were cropped for the website.  There's also a coloured version which I ditched as I felt the illustration was too busy with the extra colours.

And my god Beth Gibbons is tricky to draw.  It took four attempts... And from a record perspective I would've definitely included The Runaways 'Classic Tales' and Grantby's 'Coffee Table Music' compilation but you can't have everything.

Huge thanks to John Xela for opportunity.

Yellow artwork

Offlife magazine have been putting out great comic collections for a couple of years now - I did the cover artwork for issue two - but recently they started 'Yellow' a weekly illustrated response to the news.  I was asked to do a piece inspired by last weeks news and decided to focus on the UK political scene with a linocut piece.

Here's the final artwork.

I was asked to discuss my choice of news piece too which was slightly edited for the final Yellow website for length.  This is the entire response with added bile.

'What a week for UK politics as our grotesque Tory overlords plunge another knife into the have-nots with their Welfare Reform and Work Bill, which in turn sent Labour into disarray with only fifty members including Jeremy Corbyn (officially now my second favourite JC*) voting against it. Corbyn - the first Jeremy in the history of all the Jeremys that is actually likeable - has been a long-time Labour member consistently leaning to the left. The Labour aligned press have suggested his leadership would usher in the fall of the party but for me they've been dead for years sitting timidly in the middle of the road not really appealing to anyone in particular with their spineless rhetoric. By Wednesday Tory Blair waded in, in his blood drenched sized nines, suggesting Corbyn supporters need a heart transplant.  How does he even sleep?  Vile man.

So I present - i, The Beast of Austerity and ii, Labours Last Stand - a two print set. I decided a linocut print would suit the apocalyptic end-of-days 14th Century woodcut aesthetic I was going for seeing as the current government want to destroy everything that is good and just in this country. It's the most political illustration I've done but turned out to be a joyous process; stabbing George Osbourne or Iain Duncan Smith repeatedly in the face is richly rewarding and I can't recommend it enough to anyone that fancies having a go.

NB.  If it seems like I've drifted away from impartiality for this piece just pretend it's a deeply satirical take on bleeding-heart Socialist martyrism or something.  It probably works better like that anyway.

*John Carpenter is number one OBVS.'

Finally some process photos.

Secret 7

Secret 7 has been running for four years now and I'm proud to say I've been involved in all of them. Except of course if it's been running for five or six years in which case I missed some.  But I'm pretty sure it's just been four.  This year I chose the Rolling Stones 'Dead Flowers' to inspire my sleeve artwork.  I'm not a big RS fan but I fucking love Townes Van Zandt's cover so I channeled that to come up with my sleeve.  I painted it in gouache, added some linework in Indian ink and finished up with some watercolours and an ink wash.

The exhibition was great as always, this year taking place in Somerset House.  My piece sold which is always a bit of a relief.  I've subsequently discovered it was bought by a Tory supporter.  It's nice to know they can occasionally channel some of their money into a charity event like Secret 7 now and again.  Does feel a bit dirty though.

The remaining sleeves are up for auction now on ebay.  GO GO GO!

Puck Collective present the Jungle Book Club

Puck Collective have a brand new exhibition of work in the Book Club from the 16th of April.  You can find out more here and come along to the opening night.  In typical Puck fashion we will be running a number of jungle themed creative events throughout the duration of the exhibition including workshops, drawing events and games nights.  Each member has produced a new piece of work representing different jungle animals which will vary in size according to the relative size of each animal. More info on mine to follow.

You can also help out to fund the event via kickstarter here; we want to make it as amazing as possible and each donation is rewarded mightily.

I don't blog so much these days as I'm busy drawing and stuff but follow me on twitter (for inane music and film nonsense), instagram (for day-to-day photos and WIPs) and tumblr (for macabre inspiration and nudity).  If you want.  No presh.
